SUMMARY:Brown Bag Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Brown Bag is a free event that feature informal presentations and discussions on the first and third or more\, Tuesday noons of each month. Josephy celebrates Soroptimist and its founder Wilma Haller in this brown bag themed in honor of our Women's art exhibit.\n\n\n\nThe Wallowa County Soroptimist Club has been a major sponsor of the Josephy Center's Women's Month for the past few years. This year we have chosen March 26 to honor the organization\, one of its founders\, and some other women who have played major roles in building the place we call home.\n\n\n\nThe Wallowa County Soroptimist Club was chartered in 1947\, and immediately serving local women and children\, and providing scholarships to local students\, boys and girls\, a program that continues to this day with several thousand dollars of scholarships given annually. The Thrift shop\, the major fundraiser for the Club\, began in 1957 in the hallway of Harold's Dress Shop\, now the site of the County Chamber and Wallowa Mountain Properties. Harold's wife\, Wilma Haller\, a pre WW 2 refugee from Estonia\, saw unsold goods in the store and a community need for clothing at reasonable prices\, and the Thrift Shop was on its way.\n\nWe will honor Wilma and another pioneering community activist of her era\, Erna Ratcliff\, with brief stories of their lives and contributions. If you have stories of Wilma and Erna and of many other women "pioneers" known for their community service\, bring them along for this special celebration.
