A Celebration of the Schlick Family

Join Fishtrap and the Josephy Center as we celebrate the unique legacy of Mary Dodds Schlick and her family. Author of Columbia River Basketry, Gift of the Ancestors, Gift of the Earth, and adjunct curator of the Native American collection at Maryhill Museum, Mary will tell the story of her awakening to the beauty of Plateau Indian basketry and the practice of basket weaving. Her presentation kicks off a three-week exhibition of her own and traditional Plateau Indian baskets at the Josephy Center. Mary will be joined by her daughter, author Katherine Schlick Noe, and son, musician Joe Schlick. Katherine will share from her novel, Something to Hold, based on her experience growing up on the Warm Springs Reservation, which she began writing in workshops at Fishtrap's Summer Gathering of Writers. Joe will share songs composed at Fishtrap gatherings, including our Imnaha Writer's Retreat, from which he'll be freshly returning. In celebrating the Schlick Family, we hope to also highlight Fishtrap's legacy of connecting people to literary arts, both written and sung, and the harmony we find with the Josephy Center's mission to inspire arts and culture in Wallowa County while enhancing awareness of Native culture and history in the region. The event happens at the Josephy Center (403 N. Main Street, Joseph) and is free to the public.
